World Championships
of Icelandic horses

During one week, 22 nations try to win 24 titles as world champions. The disciplines of the titles are as diverse as the Icelandic horse breed itself. Breeding tests for young horses, four-gait tests, five-gait tests, tölt tests and races form a varied program.

The sport of gaited horse riding offers some special features:

SPECIAL GAIT TÖLT

Tölt is particularly comfortable to ride and is well known to everyone who has already done a horseback riding tour in Iceland. At the world championships, this gait is required as a four-beat in eight phases in almost every test.

SPECIAL GAIT RACE PASS

This two-stroke in six phases can also be observed in camels, but much more slowly. This special gait is required for Icelandic horses at racing speed and speeds of over 50 km/h can be reached.

TEAM PERFORMANCE

The other gaits trot, walk and canter are also shown at the World Championships. In order for this to succeed in perfection, a strong team is required. The «Feather Prize» is awarded annually to Icelandic horse riders for particularly harmonious rides.
